FCNQ launches ilagi internet service for Nunavik Baie d'Urfé, QC - 6th December, 2001 - On 6th December, 2001, la Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau-Québec (FCNQ) signed its key contract to launch Nunavik's first high-speed Internet service via satellite and cable networks, called ilagi. The new service will first be offered in Salluit and Puvirnituq this winter, followed by Inukjuak. After that, the co-ops and their Federation will bring the Internet service to all communities in Nunavik as soon as government financing is received. ilagi Internet services offers several packages to access the Internet through its high-speed cable as well as through telephone dial-up services. These are designed to meet the needs of individual customers, businesses, and government agencies. "The co-ops decided to take the lead to bring the Internet to Nunavik as long ago as 1996 when we built our first cable TV networks", explained Paulussie Kasudluak, President of FCNQ. "At that time the demand was too low to justify the cost of an Internet service, but now many are anxious to get it. Anticipating this, FCNQ has been steadily preparing its plans for high-speed Internet services to fulfill its mandates from the General Meetings of the co-op movement. "By meeting the needs of all individuals and organisations with one comprehensive Internet solution where the co-op is responsible for everything, we are able to bring a quality service at a competitive price for everyone, leaving none behind. As well, it is important for our development as Inuit, to keep such a vital service in the hands of the co-op as a community-based organisation in Nunavik. This has always been the co-op way of bringing development to our communities. "The name for coop's Internet service is derived from the Inuttitut concept of "ila" meaning people or bodies interconnected in a family. It also suggests the link to FCNQ through 'Ilagisaq', the Inuttitut name for the Federation," said Paulussie Kasudluak.
